40 Years Later, The DeLorean Makes It’s Return

The iconic DeLorean DC-12 is making it’s return after being adapted to fit into the 21st century.

Who Are DMC?

The DeLorean motor company of today is not the same company that made the original DC-12, these are two separate companies. They do however share the same vision as one another, to revolutionise the automotive industry with ground breaking projects.

“The DMC-12 was never meant to be a static interpretation of the brand, the brand would constantly evolve. Our icons are reimagined. DMC is and always was in constant evolution. An Icon is validated over time but to constantly reimagine mobility allows new icons to come into existence.”

A Worthy Successor To The Iconic DeLorean DC-12?

“The Alpha5 is a representation of the past 40 years of DeLorean,” Troy Beetz, Chief Marketing Officer of DeLorean Motor Company, said. “There was this enormous responsibility to make sure we honoured the history of the DeLorean brand, but an even greater responsibility in curating its future, I think we did both with the Alpha5.”

Only around 9,000 DC-12’s were ever produced before the company went bankrupt in the early 1980s, the car exploded in popularity after it landed a role in the “Back To The Future” films. Since then, the vehicle has become iconic and been inducted into The National Historic Vehicle Register.

The Alpha5 is a completely new and different car, but there are a few details that have been purposely designed to remind us of the inspiration behind the design. For example the iconic gull-wing doors have made a return and like the original DC-12, the rear window has vented covers.

Modern Design

The DMC Alpha5 is certainly a head turner, it is stunning! The 2 door, 4 seater electric sports coupe is nothing short of elegant and futuristic. Whilst being a completely new and modern design, at the same time it also seems familiar and nostalgic, striking the perfect balance between past and future.

Along with the massive gull-wing doors and rear window vent covers, the Alpha5 has aerodynamic blade rims on the wheels and a wraparound LED bar for the taillight. At the rear, the Alpha5 has an impressive retractable spoiler and a chunky rear diffuser. The Alpha5 is significantly larger than the original. The DC-12 was very square and box shaped, however the Alpha5’s edges are smooth and curvy. This makes it extremely aerodynamic, with a low drag coefficient of 0.23, which is not far off the most aerodynamic production cars 0.20, the Mercedes-Benz EQS.

Impressive Performance

It’s not just the looks of the Alpha5 that are impressive, the performance stats are ridiculous too. The 0 – 60 time will be completed in a mere 2.99 seconds, with 0 – 88 taking 4.35 seconds. The Alpha5’s top speed is 155 mph and it’s range from a 100+kWh battery will be 300 miles.

These are some seriously exciting numbers that compete with the likes of the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Model 3.

Minimal But Impressive Interior

The Alpha5’s interior is all new, there isn’t any resemblance to the DC-12 in here. It is modern, simple and sporty, but we love it! They have even managed to fit four sporty bucket seats in, and it looks like there will be plenty of room for everyone. The dashboard behind the flat bottomed 3-spoke steering wheel wraps around the entire cabin, giving it a cockpit like feel. There is a massive digital cockpit in front of the driver and an additional screen attached to the centre console, all of the necessary controls and infotainment will most likely be accessed on here, it looks like buttons have been kept to a minimum throughout the interior. Under this secondary screen is a storage compartment that houses USB ports, a wireless charger, and physical controls for the air-con system.

When Will It Launch and How Much Will It Cost?

The Alpha5 is being officially premiered on August 18th at the Pebble Beach Concours d ‘Elegance, where we will learn more about the vehicles features, launch date, pricing, etc.

DMC have done an amazing job of building hype and anticipation, this is their first ever product launch so unlike other car manufacturers, they have no historical audience/customers to advertise to. The iconic status of the DeLorean DC-12 is the only thing they had to work with.
