Autosport International 2023

After a 2 year break due to Covid, Autosport International finally returned to the NEC in Birmingham this year, and WDA were of course in attendance!

Autosport International brings together some of the biggest names in the motorsports industry, including manufacturers, teams, drivers, and engineers. It is a unique opportunity for consumers and professionals alike to get up close and personal with the latest technology and developments in the world of motorsports.

This year the event took place over four days from the 12th of January to the 15th. The first two being the usual trade focused days with the Engineering show and the Motorsport Business Forum taking place, whilst the final two days were consumer-focused incorporating the Racing Car Show and the Performance & Tuning Car Show.

As ever, Autosport was a brilliant opportunity for us to catch up with existing clients who were exhibiting and also have face-to-face meetings with prospective clients.

Regardless of your position on trade shows post-covid, there is no doubting the value of human interaction – getting out of the office, experiencing the buzz; and generally immersing yourself in the industry for a few days.

Between dashing across halls for meetings we also managed to admire some of the cars on display, a few of my personal favourites listed below.

McLaren Senna

Inspired by one of the greatest drivers ever, for me the McLaren Senna was one of the stand-out cars of the show. The exposed carbon green and yellow accents used for the bodywork looked awesome. This particular Senna belongs to Mr JWW, a well-known automotive content creator.

Quickly becoming his pride and joy after acquiring it in August 2021, we are told this is one of the highest-specced models in the country. With a single-minded purpose of pure speed and adrenaline, the Senna will launch from 0-60 in around 2.8 seconds, and keep pulling hard until it hits a top speed of 208mph. Next-generation carbon ceramic brakes with unique racing technology help the Senna to stop just as savagely as it accelerates.

Ariel Hipercar

The Ariel Hipercar was a huge crowd-pleaser and another favourite, no surprise really as it’s a jet-engined car that looks like the batmobile!

The Hipercar is actually an EV though, the jet engine pushing out just 34bhp – its sole purpose being to charge the battery pack to extend the overall range. The more impressive power figures come courtesy of Hipercar’s four electric motors (one on each wheel) which together produce a mighty 1,180hp and can propel this vehicle to 100mph from standstill in around 4 seconds flat…

Koenigsegg Regera

The Regera was my personal favourite. Having never seen a Koenigsegg in-person before it was a shock to turn the corner and see this beauty with its synchro-helix doors in action. This Regera is owned by leading vehicle and venue hire specialist Zach’s Garage.

The Koenigsegg Regera combines a powerful 5.0 litre twin-turbo V8 combustion engine with three electric motors and cutting-edge battery technology to produce a staggering 1500hp. Koenigsegg’s new powertrain technology, called Koenigsegg Direct Drive, removes the traditional gearbox, making the car lighter and more efficient. The Regera is one of the most special cars in Zach’s Garage collection, and looks stunning with its bespoke exposed blue carbon fibre body and 24-karat gold leaf.
