Coca Cola lorry

We three kings of Orient are, one on a bicycle, one in a car, one on a scooter blowing his hooter, following yonder star…

Now, as with every run-up to the festive season, our social feeds are full of folk casting their opinion on the latest Christmas ads by big retailers. This year we’ve seen the return of a carrot, a man learning to skateboard, an elf checkout and a boy whose Christmas list blows away. They have all had plenty of airtime (hence why I am alluding to them).

So what about some of the automotive adverts and iconic vehicles in Christmas ads and campaigns?

There are some obvious ones and some real unsung heroes, so let’s take a look at a few.

To start has to be one of the most famous Christmas vehicles of all time…

Holidays are coming… Holidays are coming… The Coca Cola lorry

For many Brits, nothing says Christmas is on the horizon once again quite like Coca-Cola’s famous TV advert jingle and seeing the brand’s giant red lorry out on the road.

The Coca-Cola Truck gained its iconic status after it hit our screens in Christmas 1995. Since then, the Truck has undergone some changes, but its appearance on our TVs still marks the start of the festive season for many people across the world.

My Personal Favourite – Hagerty‘s, The One That Almost Got Away

All automotive enthusiasts can relate to that feeling of ‘I never should have sold that car’. Hagerty’s short film tells the story of a gentleman who did just that but holds on to the memories with such fondness. Regretting the time that he traded dreams for reality.

I’m not going to give the whole plot away, just watch it! I bet you get a tear in your eye…

A Very Muddy Morgan Christmas – Plus Four CX-T prototype

As with all automotive Christmas posts on social media, you get inundated with a load of stock photos of the usual and lazy go-to of a car with a Christmas Tree strapped to a car. Morgan Motor Company turned this overused concept into a fantastic video featuring the Plus Four CX-T prototype.

Based on a sheet metal apprentice being sent to collect the works Christmas Tree. There was only one car good enough for the job and the apprentice chose the Plus Four CX-T prototype. I have to say it looks like the apprentice Hamish Cameron-Eveleigh had ‘muddy’ good fun!

Hipster Santa in Grey Suit & The Electric Audi RS E-Tron GT

Audi dusted off and repurposed part of their Christmas video from 2020. They took down the original video and updated the camouflage wrap as the model had been released. Above is the original video from 2020.

Featuring a man, clad in a grey suit accessorised with a red tie, standing in a very modern living room with a view to the Northern Lights, being announced by a younger man that “it’s time”. The latter, who seems to be his assistant, leads him to a highly secured parking lot, where his new sleigh awaits him – it’s the fully electric Audi RS E-Tron GT.

A True Christmas Story – Lamborghini

Remember the dad who 3D-printed his son a Lamborghini Aventador to fulfil the latter’s Forza Horizon aspirations? Well, in this heartwarming ad, Lamborghini took it one step further and made the young boy’s dream a reality. Priceless!

As a child of the ’80s (yes, yes I know I don’t look it!) I was always heavily influenced by television advertising, billboards and printed publications. Well, these were really the only channels to the consumer back then before the tinterbobbins came along. I have decided to share some examples that stood out to me as a super influential sponge of a child. Read more…
